Weekend Preview

This weekend we have a slew of leftovers, sequels, small romcoms, movies for ADHD teens and Pirana 3d. This time of year is usually known as the dumping field for movies, especially next weekend, and the weekend after. Everyone is going back to school, is at the cottage for the final weeks, on vacation, so on so no real important event film comes out. These next few weekends are abysmal, and have shown some real disasters in past years.

First we have ‘The Switch’ staring Jason Batemn, Jeff Goldblum and Jennifer Aniston. The Switch has been recieved mixed reviews, some calling it lazy and other calling it daring and heartfelt funny. The Switch is being released in the lowest number of theatres this weekend, so don’t expect any big numbers, it should fall between 5 -10 million.

Then we have Lottery Ticket, which looks and is being called a big dump of sterotypes of the black community. I have no interest in this film and it should also do mid-high single digits.

Then we have Pirana 3D which is… um… currently sitting at 89%! on RottenTomatoes. Now, I knew this would be a fun, horror flick that is cheesey to the max and for all the right reasons but I didn’t expect it to be getting such good reviews. The director of this also directed The Hills Have Eyes remake, which is a fantastic horror film if you haven’t seen it. This should do low-mid teens, but this isn’t a movie for the mass audience, same with Scott Pilgrim, it is for a niche horror audience who gets it.

Then we have Nanny McPhee Returns. This is another one that looks like a mess but critics are loving it. Emma Thompson can do no wrong, I do love her but I don’t love the Nanny McPhee character or the first movie. Should do decent business though, around $15 million for the weekend.

Lastly we have Vampire Sucks which is standing at 3% on Rotten Tomatoes. My favorite review is quote as saying “This is the type of movie were finger food is being served and it’s “finger” food.” Sums up the level of humor perfectly. The movie made 4 million dollars on it’s opening wednesday because teenagers who have short attention spans and low levels of intelligence rushed to see this next Best Picture winner. I have so many issues with this film, who sees it, it’s creator and how crap like this gets made, but I don’t want a headache today. Hopefully this burned off it’s initial “rush” yesterday and will die off forever, or just make under 10 million for the weekend.
